Jun 04, 2009: Electronics Recycling Event Scheduled in Clay County

KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Old electronics need a place to go besides a landfill. That's why Clay County has joined forces with the cities of Claycomo, Excelsior Springs, Gladstone, Kansas City, Liberty, Smithville and Pleasant Valley in hosting an electronics recycling collection event for citizens to safely dispose of their old electronics, including such items as televisions, computers, hard drives, monitors, and other electronic devices. The event is open to the public and scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 20, next to the Metro North Mall recycling center, US 169 Highway and Barry Road. Other event partners include: Bridging the Gap, MARC Solid Waste Management District and the Surplus Exchange.

“This is something that is really needed in the Northland, especially with the switch to digital television signals June 12,” said Katee Porter, Clay County Eastern Commissioner. “As technology continues to get better and better, the older electronics devices get replaced with the newest TV, game system and computer. Something has to be done with the old pieces of equipment. Hazardous materials and heavy metals used in making these things work are reclaimable and can be safely removed keeping them out of the waste stream. Here at Clay County, we felt it was important to provide a safe way for citizens to dispose of old electronic equipment and accessories, so we joined with a number of partners to bring this e-recycling event to our citizens.”
Some fees apply; computer monitors will cost $10 and televisions range from $10 to $25, depending on size. Also accepted are keyboards, computer mice, cell phones, printers, stereos and other electronics. Fees cover the cost of shipping to Midwest Electronics Recovery, Walford, Iowa, as well as labor, insurance and proper disposal, a process which also entails destruction of data. No materials are sent overseas.

For more information on the event contact The MARC Solid Waste Management District at 816-701-8226. Other opportunities for recycling electronics are available to those who cannot make it to this event. Just visit www.recyclespot.org or call 816-474-8326 for locations.
