Sep 16, 2009: Author, Historian Donald Gilmore to sign new book at James Farm fall black powder shoot this SaturdayKEARNEY, Missouri: Kansas and Missouri Boarder War scholar and author Donald Gilmore will sign his latest book starting at 9 a.m., Sept. 19, during the upcoming black powder shoot at the Jesse James Farm and Museum in Kearney. Gilmore's new book, Riding Vengeance with the James Gang, is a novel that chronicles guerrilla fighters, according to a news release from Pelican Publishing Company, Gretna, LA, the book's publisher.While Gilmore autographs his latest work, marksmen will shoot it out for braggin' rights and prizes, from 9 a.m. to high noon. The black powder shoot, hosted by the Friends of the James Farm, a private support organization, is a fundraiser for the group, which supports the historic site. “The Black Powder Shoot usually draws 30 or more contestants from Missouri and across neighboring states,” Bryan Ivlow, shoot coordinator, said. “The shoot out is a fun event for visitors as well as contestants; it adds a sense of the Jesse James time period to a visit to the James Farm.” The Black Powder Shoot is a two-in-one contest that tests the shooters' skills shooters using cap-and-ball revolvers or frontier cartridge revolvers. Replicas are allowed. Fixed sights are required and participants will use the dueling stance only for the contest. Shoot out registration is required. For more information about the contest, participants should contact Ivlow at 816-320-3426. On-site registration for shooters begins at 8 a.m. and ends promptly at 9 a.m. The fee is $15.00 and includes a one-year membership in the Friends of the James Farm. According to a promotional flyer for the shoot out, “this ain't no Tea Dance; it's an event!'” Therefore, period style dress is strongly encouraged for participants and guests. The museum is open daily and includes an audio-visual presentation, museum gallery, Farm home (the birthplace of Jesse James) and gift shop with a variety of historic games, Civil War era books and many other items and souvenirs.
