Mission:

The Department of Highways and Transportation is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of 375 miles of roads and 68 bridges in unincorporated areas of Clay County. The Department maintains and resurfaces asphalt, chip seal, and gravel roads throughout the County. All bridges are inspected annually with a state inspector to ensure safety. It is also responsible for mowing and brush removal in right of ways on County roads and for snow removal and ice control. Additionally, the Department maintains over 3,600 traffic control, street name, and regulatory signs and more than 1,700 metal drainage culverts. It oversees the construction of new roads in subdivisions and issues driveway permits for new construction.

Current Bridge Closings and Constructions (Revised Oct 2009)

Schoolfield Road (between NE 144th Street and NE 148th Street)
A routine inspection by MoDOT in November 2004 revealed that a support beam on the bridge over Williams Creek had broken and the bridge was unsafe.  The bridge was closed immediately and will remain closed until it is replaced.  Design and engineering have been completed for the new bridge and construction to replace the bridge will begin when funding is available.

Bishop Road (between NE 172nd Street and NE 178th Street)
This bridge was closed in October 2008 due to structural deficiencies in the foundation of the bridge.  The bridge will remain closed until it can be programmed for replacement.

Old Mo Highway 210 (south of new Mo Hwy 210 and Mo Hwy EE)
Traffic is limited to one-lane due to structural deterioration in the closed lane.
