Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART)

The Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) Unit was formed through a Federal grant. It was instituted when it became apparent that domestic abuse cases had become a major problem for law enforcement. Iin addition several collateral duties have been assigned to this unit.

• DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: They are responsible for assisting other Clay County law enforcement agencies and victims of violence obtain ex-partes after normal business hours. They help victims get into “safe houses” if requested. Attempt to provide service on all ex-partes from Clay County, or from outside counties and states. (An ex-parte is a court order to the alleged abuser to not have contact with the victim until such time that the court renders a judgment supporting the petition or denying it. Some states issue a peace bond or restraining order. There are restrictions on who can obtain an ex-parte as well as specific acts that can be considered by the court. In most cases of “Domestic Abuse” an ex-parte is appropriate.
• SEX OFFENDERS REGISTRY: Register and track convicted sexual offenders living in Clay County. Petition the court for arrest warrants for those who fail to register or avoid registering as mandated by law.
• GUN PERMITS AND CONCEALED CARRY: Conduct necessary gun permit investigations and concealed-carry permit investigations.
• OTHER DUTIES: Can and will conduct classes in Clay County schools regarding domestic abuse matters. When available conduct seminars on domestic abuse to civic organizations.
